  • A time of service, A time of need

"The Foreign Service has been my family — close friends, colleagues under fire, and partners in life's adventures. That camaraderie is what excites me about the Senior Living Foundation — established by colleagues to support those of our Service who have special needs late in life. They served before us and need our help now. The Foundation keeps the spirit and camaraderie of our Service alive as it reaches out with care and concern to those who went before us."
    - Ambassador Edward “Skip” Gnehm

  • Succeeding in our mission

“To you and all at the SLF, my sincerest thanks for all that you, via the Foundation, have done for me. My quality of life has been enhanced because of everyone at the SLF. Thank you, thank you and thank you again.” - Grantee

  • A life-long commitment

A retired Foreign Service employee contacted the Foundation over a decade ago in need of assistance to pay for home health care for her husband, a retired Foreign Service employee as well. The Foundation established a grant to pay for the husband’s home health care expenses until his passing. Our support did not end there; we paid for geriatric care services for the widow and started a grant for basic living expenses.

Senior Living Foundation

We are a non-profit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization established to assist retired members of the American Foreign Service and their spouses who have become physically and/or mentally unable to cope with factors of life that they face during their later years. The Foundation provides information and assistance in obtaining community, state, federal and private resources. The Foundation offers guidance through the often difficult process of gaining access to available resources to retired Foreign Service personnel.

Our primary goal is to provide assistance and, when more help is needed, some financial support to improve the lives of these deserving individuals. While this support often takes the form of monthly grants to cover the cost of medical transportation or hearing aids, a growing number of colleagues need more extensive support such as Home Health Care, medication and basic living expenses. The Senior Living Foundation provides temporary and one-time grants as they are needed. The Foundation achieves its goals via tax-deductible support from corporate and individual donors.

Some examples of the aid that the Foundation offers include:

  • Hearing aids
  • Home Health Care
  • Transportation to medical appointments
  • Groceries
  • Prescription drug costs
  • Durable medical equipment (e.g. wheelchairs)
  • Basic living expenses
  • Senior living facility fees
